A Master's thesis by a recent graduate of the Web and Data Science programme at University of Koblenz, Vishal Kumar, has been published in the highly respected peer-reviewed journal Progress in Disaster Science (Impact Factor: 3.8). The study, titled “Crisis Communication and Media Influence During Nokia Water Contamination Event,” analyses public sentiment and official communication during Finland’s largest waterborne epidemic, the Nokia water contamination crisis.

This publication represents a significant achievement for Vishal and highlights the programme’s success in fostering research that is immediately relevant to real-world challenges in public health and crisis management. The research, which formed the core of his Master's degree, was conducted during an exchange visit to the University of Oulu in Finland. He utilised data science techniques on a unique dataset encompassing public online forums, news reports, and official audits. By applying a novel combination of aspect-based sentiment analysis and thematic clustering, the study was able to trace the real-time evolution of public trust and emotional response throughout the three-month crisis timeline.

We are incredibly proud of our student. The publication of his Master’s thesis in Progress in Disaster Science is a powerful affirmation of the analytical training provided by our Web and Data Science programme. This success underscores our commitment to producing graduates who not only master complex data techniques but also apply them to solve critical societal problems, proving that student research can have immediate, high-level scholarly impact.

The methodology developed in the thesis provides actionable insights for public health agencies and crisis communication teams, emphasising the need for timely, transparent, and coordinated communication in the face of widespread public anxiety.

The paper is now available online at the Progress in Disaster Science journal website.
