Titel: Enhancing Self-Regulated Learning in Primary Students in South Australia: A Large-Scale Clustered RCT with a Qualitative Study of Teacher Perspectives
Abstract: This presentation reports on the formation and impact of a large-scale, pragmatic, clustered randomised control trial conducted in South Australian primary schools to investigate the impact of a self-regulated learning intervention using mental contrasting with implementation intentions. Adapted from research conducted in Germany, the intervention supported students to set meaningful learning goals, identify obstacles to their progress, and trial strategies to overcome these obstacles and achieve their goals. Central to its impact was the professional learning undertaken by teachers, who applied their understanding of the approach within diverse classroom contexts. Drawing on quantitative and qualitative data from over 4000 students and educators across 57 schools, the study explores how the program was implemented and experienced across varied settings. Findings from surveys and interviews with teachers and school leaders suggest the program enhanced student self-regulation, independence, and resilience when embedded in everyday practice. The presentation highlights the importance of the intervention along with the challenges of maintaining fidelity at scale and implications for adapting SRL interventions in real-world classrooms.
