Leave of absence

During a semester of leave, coursework and work relevant for the examination cannot be completed. The responsible examination board or examination office decides on exceptions.

The leave of absence does not exempt you from paying student fees!

Reasons for leave of absence

Students may be granted leave of absence for the following reasons in particular:

  1. Maternity and parental leave;

  2. own illness (the illness and its expected duration must be certified by a doctor);

  3. Illness, births or deaths in the family that make a predominant presence absolutely necessary;

  4. Continuation of studies at a foreign university or study period abroad;

  5. Completion of a practical activity related to the degree programme, provided that this cannot be completed during the lecture-free period;

  6. Completion of compulsory service in accordance with Article 12a (1) and (2) of the Basic Law; Please note that you also have the option of de-registration. Please contact the Student Registrar's Office to find out about the advantages and disadvantages of taking a leave of absence and exmatriculation.

  7. Cases of particular social hardship, especially if students are temporarily unable to secure their livelihood or fulfil their maintenance obligations in any other way;

  8. Activity in student self-administration or in university bodies and committees.

Duration of the leave of absence

The leave of absence is granted for the duration of one term. It applies to all study programmes for which students are enrolled and is effective for the entire term, regardless of the time of application or approval.

During your studies, a leave of absence can usually be at most twice for a maximum of two consecutive termsIn the case of maternity and parental leave, for the duration of the maternity or parental leave.

Application for leave of absence

The application for leave of absence must be submitted in KLIPS to be filled out. The application must then be printed out and sent to the Student Registrar's Office
