Travel and travel narratives are deeply shaped by the social, physical, and existential vulnerability of the traveler and the traveling body. Fatigue, illness, injury, fear, sensory overload, and the loss of bodily control accompany travel as ordinary rather than exceptional experiences. This conference focuses on vulnerability as a key concept for rethinking travel literature and traveling bodies. We understand vulnerability not merely as an attribute of specific individuals or social groups, but as an ontological condition of an embodied being, intensified and made manifest through practices of mobility. Drawing on approaches from literary studies, affect theory, phenomenology, body studies, postcolonial studies, disability studies, tourist studies, and mobility studies, the conference includes contributions that examine how travel texts articulate, stage, negotiate, or hide the bodily vulnerability of the traveler as well as the ‘travelee’, including the physical, psychological, and social consequences and effects for the narrative.

Travel to Ghent

TRAIN

Ghent has two railway stations, Gent-Sint-Pieters and Gent-Dampoort. We highly recommend guests look for connections to Gent-Sint-Pieters train station, either via the SNCB/NMBS app (Belgian National Railways) or, if applicable, their respective European railway system.

If you travel to Belgium via international trains, you can easily transfer to a domestic train to Ghent at the stations of Bruxelles-Midi (Brussels-South), Antwerp-Central, or Lille-Europe (France).

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS

Brussels Airport (BRU) / Zaventem

  • Train: Easily accessible via a direct train connection from the airport station (Brussels-Airport-Zaventem) located beneath the arrivals hall. It takes approximately 45 minutes to reach Gent-Sint-Pieters.

Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL)

  • Bus: A Flibco shuttle bus drives directly from Charleroi Airport to Ghent 12 times a day, taking about 70 minutes. The bus drops you off directly at Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station.

REGIONAL AIRPORTS

Antwerp (ANR), Ostend-Bruges (OST), or Liège (LGG)

  • Flights to and from different European destinations depart from and arrive at these three other regional Belgian airports.
  • Visitors arriving here can transfer via domestic train lines directly to Gent-Sint-Pieters.
