The European Health Dataspace (EHDS) expands health data sharing beyond direct care and introduces governance, transparency, trust, and secondary-use considerations that are not fully captured by established technology acceptance models such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). To address this gap, we developed the health dataspace technology acceptance model (HDS-TAM) and evaluated it using the German electronic patient record (ePA) as an illustrative health dataspace (HDS) application.
As part of a structured literature review, 1,788 entries were reviewed, 134 full-text articles were examined, and 68 studies were selected for model development in order to derive an HDS-oriented framework for technology acceptance.
HDS-TAM was subsequently applied in a scenario-based online survey conducted between March and April 2025 to assess its suitability for explaining acceptance of the ePA from the patient’s perspective. Of the 235 visits to the questionnaire and 163 submitted responses, 149 valid responses were analyzed.
