Research internship WS 2025/26 - 5G campus network
Conducting a field study with the nomadic 5G system from the NoLa project
Starting point
The eGov and Computer Networks working groups are offering a joint research internship this winter semester.
Students are given the opportunity to work with the nomadic 5G system from the research project NoLa (https://nola-5g.de/) to carry out a smaller field study yourself.
After instruction and familiarisation with the system (5G core, RAN, switch, end devices; essentially "only" the knowledge to start up and shut down the system is required), various aspects of 5G Communication are to be investigated on campus and systematic series of measurements are to be carried out for this purpose.
If there is still time or demand is high, a simulative comparison using radio planning software can also be considered.
Objectives and tasks
Main tasks are:
- Literature research/analysis of related work on measuring 5G Communication, in particular path loss models
- Familiarisation with the handling of the 5G campus network system and the measuring equipment
- Development of 5G scenarios for measurement on campus
- Carrying out the measurements
- Setting up the measurement algorithms and carrying out the evaluation
- Project management and project documentation
- Final presentation
- optional (in case of interest or high demand):
◦ Research on available simulation environments (open vs. closed source)
◦ Subsequent execution of the simulation
Prerequisites
The students should Competences in the following areas:
- a certain familiarity with the Linux command line (both the system and the end devices are Linux-based).
- Ability to Analysing measurement data
- Problem-solving ability
- for the radio planning software (optional): Willingness to familiarise yourself with the Communication models in more detail.
Your benefit
Gain experience in a real research environment of the recently completed NoLa research project
- Gaining valuable practical experience in the field of 5G (operating the technology and collecting measurement data)
- Experience in the organisation and application of scientific methods
- Strengthening personal "soft skills" through cooperation / integration in a project team (e.g. Communication, coordination)
- Experience in project management
- Experience with project documentation in a real project environment
- Experience in the Communication and presentation of project results
