The Ghanaian start-up Alleina AI has received funding as part of the German EXIST start-up grant from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. This success emphasises the role of the StArfrica project at the University of Koblenz as a bridge builder between the innovation ecosystems of Africa and Germany.

The Ghanaian start-up Alleina AI has received funding as part of the EXIST start-up grant - a nationwide programme to support innovative start-ups from the university environment. The funding also recognises the work of the StArfrica project at the University of Koblenz, which acts as an interface between African and German innovation ecosystems.

Alleina AI is responding to a challenge faced by many small and medium-sized enterprises: new legal requirements relating to the use of artificial intelligence and the handling of data are becoming increasingly complex and are changing rapidly. The team has developed a digital platform that is offered as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution - i.e. as software that can be used online - to relieve companies of this burden. The platform helps companies to understand regulatory requirements, keep an eye on legal changes and recognise risks at an early stage. This allows companies to concentrate more on their actual innovation processes.

The foundation stone for the funding was laid in February 2025, when the StArfrica team - represented by Lilla Grün and Derrick S. Vormawor - got to know Alleina AI at a meeting in Ghana. A close collaboration developed from the professional exchange, in the course of which a joint concept paper was drawn up. This was then successfully submitted to the EXIST grant programme via the StArfrica project at the University of Koblenz.

The funding approval confirms the potential of the solution to support small and medium-sized enterprises in particular in the responsible use of AI. At the same time, it strengthens innovation relations between Africa and Europe and emphasises the importance of international start-up cooperation.

With the approved funding, the Alleina AI team is now preparing to move to Germany in February 2026. The first functional prototype of the platform will be developed there. The StArfrica project is supporting the start-up's further development and is thus setting a visible example for African start-up ideas with an international perspective.
