UNIVERSITY OF KOBLENZ
Universitätsstraße 1
56070 Koblenz
Dear alumni,
we are pleased to present you with a new edition of our newsletter featuring news from our university. In the coming winter semester, two new degree programs will start at the University of Koblenz: the master's in interdisciplinary studies program and the master in two subjects program. FUNK, the institution for specialized language support classes for students (from grade 8 onwards) and trainees with a multilingual background, has a 16-year tradition. To ease the transfer from university to work, the Institute of Education is once again offering practical and transfer days for education students this year.
Members of the Institute of Study of Culture have contributed to the workshop “The Art of Encounter – Competent Dealing with Simplified Cultural Representation” and the intercultural cinema/film days, thus helping to bring different worlds into contact with each other.
Did you also know that the proportion of women at the University of Koblenz is significantly higher than the German national average?
We hope you enjoyed our selection in this issue.
Best regards,
Your team at the Central Alumni Office
The new master's programmes at Koblenz University offer greater freedom in study design and allow for individual interests to be taken into account due to a flexible modular structure. This enables students to tailor their studies to their individual needs and opens up a wide range of opportunities for profile building.
The two subject master's programme builds on the two subject bachelor's programme, opening up new perspectives. In the interdisciplinary master's programme, a wide range of combination options offer a broad spectrum of study opportunities. Various subjects are available in major or minor combinations with a decidedly interdisciplinary focus.
An optional mobility module enables valuable experiences outside the University of Koblenz in Germany and abroad, e.g. through a semester abroad, an additional internship or the integration of courses offered by other universities. Through the module ‘Profilbildung für Wissenschaft und Praxis’ (profile building for science and practice), students develop their own individual career-related profile, supplemented by the acquisition of future skills.
Becoming familiar with different disciplines, their theories, concepts and methods as well as the element of profile building is a great advantage for students on their way into the world of work and prepares them for working together in diverse teams in a wide variety of contexts.
FUNK stands for more than 16 years of successful specialised language support classes at the University of Koblenz for school pupils (from year 8 onwards) and trainees with a multilingual background. Participants are taught by teacher training students at the university in the languages of various subjects and are supported and accompanied by a team of academics. In this way, FUNK contributes substantially to teacher training, while the data obtained in the project helps to answer current research questions.
We act as contact persons for all questions relating to specialised language support lessons and offer the opportunity to shadow lessons, as well as providing data for further research questions. Cooperation with all stakeholders in the educational landscape is central to the success of knowledge transfer, to which we warmly invite everyone.

In the ISSO workshop ‘The Art of Encounter – Competent Approaches to Simplified Cultural Representation’ on Thursday, 28 August, Jessica Gülen (Institute of Cultural Studies, University of Koblenz) will raise awareness of processes of self-perception and external perception when encountering ‘others’ in person and in the media. Before showing ways of open, transformative encounters on an equal footing, processes of simplified cultural representation will be critically examined.
