DAAD-Programmes

While most funding programmes require an application via the DAAD portal, applications for individual programmes are submitted via the International Relations Office. Information on how to apply can be found under the respective links. Please note that the overview of DAAD funding programmes for which the application is made directly via the DAAD is only a selection. For further programmes and detailed information, we also recommend that you do your own research using the DAAD scholarship database.

DAAD Programmes: Online Application

The DAAD has introduced a central procedure for its project funding programmes: the current new calls for applications are published on the three specified dates in early April, mid-June and early October. In the case of special calls for proposals at short notice, the DAAD reserves the right to publish calls for proposals between these dates. You will find the respective announcement texts in the new scholarship database, which you can use to search specifically for DAAD programmes.

Funding: Congress and Lecture Trips Abroad

The DAAD supports active participation (own lecture, poster presentation) in a recognised international academic event (congress, symposium, but not in a seminar, course or similar) abroad. The application must be received by the DAAD at least four months before the first day of the event; confirmation of acceptance of the lecture can be submitted later.

Short-term Scholarships for Doctoral Students

This scholarship programme offers the opportunity to conduct research abroad for a shorter period of time within the framework of a doctoral project and to gain further academic qualifications.

In addition, the exchange of experience and networking with international colleagues is supported. The funding period is 1 - 6 months.

One-year Scholarships for Doctoral Students

The scholarship offers the opportunity to conduct research abroad within the framework of a doctoral project and to gain further academic qualifications. The funding period is 7 - 12 months.

RISE - Research Internships in Science and Engineering - Research Internships for Doctoral Students in Germany

In order to promote student exchange from North America and the UK to Germany in science and engineering, the DAAD offers doctoral students from German universities the opportunity to apply to the DAAD for employment of a foreign research intern. North American and British undergraduate students are to support doctoral students in their experimental work by means of a scholarship during a 10 - 12 week stay in Germany. The following subject areas are supported: Biology, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Geosciences and Engineering, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science.

Funding for short-term lectureships abroad

Funding for short-term lectureships is intended to make it possible or easier for foreign higher education institutions to invite particularly qualified academics from German higher education institutions to organise courses in specialised scientific fields or for interdisciplinary contexts; at the same time, the programme is intended to showcase the capabilities of German science abroad. Funding is provided in particular for lectureships which

  • serve the further training of graduate students in the form of compact courses, block courses or special courses,

  • are linked to other programmes of the DAAD or other science or research funding institutions,

  • promote further cooperation with former scholarship holders,

  • serve to prepare, accompany or provide follow-up support for a long-term lectureship

Funding for Foreign Guest Lecturers to Teach at German Higher Education Institutions

The DAAD Visiting Lecturer Programme, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), serves to internationalise German universities and strengthen the international dimension in teaching. The foreign guest lecturers are supposed to bring an international perspective to regular teaching. This gives students an international learning experience and intercultural competencies which they can otherwise only acquire by studying abroad. When planning a guest lectureship, attention should therefore always be paid to an appropriate broad impact and sustainability.
