The Institute

The institute currently has five professors (Prof. Dr. Hannes Frey, Prof. Dr. Frank Hopfgartner, Prof. Dr. Jan Jürjens, Prof. Dr. Ralf Lämmel and Prof. Dr. Viorica Sofronie-Stokkermans), who also form the joint institute management. There are two research-oriented institutes at the Institute of Computer Science. The Institute for Software Engineering (IST), with Prof. Dr. Jan Jürjens as head, and the Institute for Web Science and Technologies (WeST).

The Bachelor's program has a standard period of study of 6 semesters and concludes with the Bachelor of Science degree. For the successful completion of the program, 180 ECTS must be achieved. Of this, 15 ECTS are allotted to the bachelor thesis.

The diagram above shows the proportions of the content-related subareas of the study program, divided according to ECTS.

The bachelor's degree program in computer science provides knowledge of permanently relevant fundamentals and methods of computer science and the competence to be able to apply this knowledge independently in current information technologies and in a broad range of application areas. Thus, you will acquire the knowledge and methods to understand and creatively solve new computer science problems.

Early in the bachelor's program, you will gain a practical orientation through dedicated lectures on programming and fundamentals of software engineering, as well as special programming internships. By choosing a minor subject (economics, business informatics, mathematics, physics), you will also gain important insights into relevant application areas.

Master - Computer Science

The Bachelor's program has a standard period of study of 4 semesters and concludes with the Master of Science degree. For the successful completion of the program, 120 ECTS must be achieved. Of this, 30 ECTS are allotted to the Master's thesis.

The diagram above shows the proportions of the content-related subareas of the study program, divided according to ECTS.

The research-oriented master's degree in computer science builds on the bachelor's degree in computer science or the bachelor's degree in computer visualistics. The target group is prospective students who want to expand their scientific skills, sharpen their qualification for management positions by building their profile, and advance their personal development after a successful bachelor's degree.

In addition to deepening specialist knowledge in a selected area of focus, the program therefore primarily promotes independence as well as the ability to make judgments and decisions, and offers events for team and leadership training, project management and research internships. Students can choose between "Mobile Systems Engineering", "Data & Knowledge Engineering" and "Software Engineering".
