A second degree programme is defined as participation in a second or further university degree programme after having already completed a degree (e.g. Bachelor's, Master's, Diplom, Magister, FH degree). However, a second degree programme does not include a first consecutive Master's degree programme that leads to a second professionally qualifying degree after obtaining a Bachelor's degree (no other professionally qualifying degree such as Diplom or Magister is permitted). The examination as to whether it is a second degree programme is always carried out on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants for a second degree programme can only name one study programme or combination of study programmes in their application for admission.
Information on the semester fee can be found here.
Here you will find information on the general Admission requirements and about the application procedure for Applicants with a university entrance qualification from Germany and the EUand Applications from non-EU countries.
Special conditions apply to applications for second degree programmes with restricted admission:
In study programmes with restricted admissions, a maximum quota of 3% of the study places to be awarded is provided for second degree applicants. The criterion for allocation is the grade of the first university degree and the justification for the necessity of the second degree programme.
If there are more applications than the places available in this quota, a measurement number is determined. This is made up of the grade of the final examination of the first degree programme and the degree of importance of the reasons for the second degree programme.
1. the following scores are awarded for the result of the final examination of the first degree programme:
Grades "excellent" and "very good": 4 points
Grades "good" and "fully satisfactory": 3 points
Grade "satisfactory": 2 points
Grade "sufficient": 1 point
If the grade of the final examination of the first degree programme is not proven, 1 point is awarded.
2 The following scores are awarded according to the degree of importance of the reasons for the second degree programme:
"Compelling professorship appointments": 9 points
There are compelling professional reasons if a professorship appointment is sought that can only be exercised on the basis of two completed study programmes.
"Academic reasons": 7 to 11 points
Academic reasons exist if, with a view to a later activity in science and research, a further academic qualification in another study programme is sought on the basis of the previous academic and practical activity.
"Special professorship appointments": 7 points
There are special professional reasons if the professional situation is significantly improved by the fact that the degree from the second degree programme meaningfully complements the first degree programme; this is the case if the professorship appointment sought through the second degree programme in conjunction with the first degree programme is to be regarded as a combination of two fields of activity specific to the degree programme. As a rule, the activity cannot already be carried out after completing one of the two study programmes and must be demonstrably sought by you.
"Other professorship appointments": 4 points
Other professional reasons exist if the second degree programme is necessary due to the individual's professional situation for other reasons, in particular to compensate for an undue professional disadvantage or to expand the employment opportunities of the job performed with the help of the first degree programme.
"None of the above reasons": 1 point
If the second degree programme is being pursued after a family phase in order to return to or re-enter working life, a supplement of up to 2 points can be taken into account when calculating the number of points.
