The University of Koblenz stands for interdisciplinary research with social relevance. Research at our university means creating new perspectives: scientifically sound, consciously networking between disciplines and always in dialogue with society, business and regional and international partners.

Our research focuses on forward-looking areas such as Education, Computer Sciences, Material and the Environment as well as Culture and its Mediation. These topics are closely interlinked and form the basis for innovative research projects with high social relevance.

We promote an open, collaborative research culture that inspires curiosity, asks questions and develops sustainable solutions for current challenges. We offer our researchers excellent framework conditions, creative freedom and targeted support - for research that not only recognises the questions of tomorrow, but also actively and responsibly answers them.

Research in the faculties

Research at the University of Koblenz is based on a strong disciplinary foundation in our four faculties: Educational Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Mathematics / Natural Sciences and Computer Sciences. They work on central academic and practical issues - in a cooperative and interdisciplinary networking approach.

Our faculties shape the research strategy, promote young talent and drive innovation in research alliances, institutes and central institutions. They stand for excellence, transfer, internationalisation and active dialogue with society.

Thinking ahead in an interdisciplinary way

The four faculties pool their expertise in interdisciplinary, cross-thematic research alliances in which scientists work together on projects relevant to the future. The interdisciplinary structure strengthens the exchange between theory and practice, promotes innovative research projects and creates synergies for sustainable scientific excellence.

Education - Digitalisation - Heterogeneity

How can education succeed in a digital, diverse society? This research focus combines Educational Sciences, Computer Sciences, Psychology and Social Sciences to develop innovative concepts for teaching and learning. The focus is on topics such as digital educational media, inclusive didactics, educational equity and the funding of individual learning paths in heterogeneous learning environments - from school to life-long learning.

Digital change - Health - Ecology

Technological innovations are changing the way we live - with consequences for the environment, health and social systems. This focus area examines the complex interactions between digital change, sustainable development and individual and social health issues. The research combines environmental sciences, Computer Sciences, health and social sciences as well as economics to develop interdisciplinary solutions for shaping a sustainable future.

Interdisciplinary teacher training, teacher education

Teachers play a central role in social development - their training must fulfil this responsibility. At the University of Koblenz, teacher training, teacher education is consistently interdisciplinary: education, subject, discipline, social and cultural studies work closely together in order to train future teachers not only professionally, but also pedagogically, ethically and digitally competent. Research into teacher training, teacher education is both theoretically sound and practically orientated - with close links to schools, teaching and social reality

Culture - Participation - Democracy

Social participation, cultural diversity and democratic values are at the centre of this research focus. It examines how cultural practices, language, media and political education can contribute to strengthening democratic societies - especially in the face of polarisation, disinformation and exclusion. Researchers from the fields of cultural studies, social sciences, linguistics and political science work together here to develop concepts for successful participation, inclusion and democratic education.

Development plan UK2030 - Shaping research strategically

With the uk2030 development plan, the University of Koblenz is setting a clear strategic framework for its future orientation, including in the area of research. The plan defines central fields of action and objectives in order to strengthen research activities in a targeted manner, promote interdisciplinary collaboration and expand international visibility.

uk2030 is therefore not only a strategic document, but also a guide for the further development of the university as a research-active and socially effective institution. Researchers are invited to play an active role in shaping this process - through their own initiatives, cooperation and impulses from practice.
