Women* are still underrepresented in the academic world. This also applies to the University of Koblenz: even though the proportion of women among employees here is 42%, which is above the national average, 62% of them are employed part-time. In addition, 85% of women are employed on temporary contracts, which makes it difficult for them to plan their future, exacerbates dependency relationships and jeopardises their economic independence.
Gender equality measures are therefore urgently needed, but can be implemented at many levels. In the university sector, they are initially orientated towards the core tasks of the university: research, academic qualification and teaching. An overview of the projects and measures, organised according to these fields of action, can be found on this page.
Clicking on the respective logos will take you to the project page. Clicking on the fields of action will take you to a detailed overview page, which will provide you with further information on the projects in the field of action.
*Even though both the Higher Education Act and the Gender Equality Plan only address the binary genders, the programmes try to respect and consider gender diversity.
Equal opportunities...
... in relation to LGBTQIA+
The mandate for action LGBTQIA+ is dedicated to the concerns of the queer community. Gender equality work is not only aimed at equal opportunities for men and women, but also at equal opportunities for all genders. In this context, projects and measures are to be realised that focus on the needs and concerns of the LGBTGIA+.
... in terms of education and public relations
Gender equality work is a complex system of different action and work processes. One part of the field of action is awareness-raising and educational work. Corresponding action measures take place in various spectrums of media effectiveness. Within this listed field of action, there are various projects that promote gender equality representation in the sense of educational or public relations work has realised.
... in relation to research
Equal opportunities measures endeavour to take effect at as many structural levels as possible. As one of the core tasks of all universities, the research field of action in focus. In the field of gender equality work in particular, there is a kind of complementary approach: on the one hand, the promotion of gender-related research is intended to create and transfer knowledge about the conditions and causes of inequality.
... in terms of young talent & career
The proportion of women in professorships at the University of Koblenz-Landau was around 35.3% in 2020, around 10% above the national average of 25.6%, determined by Statista for 2019. It is therefore not surprising that the university is usually at the top of gender equality rankings. However, there is still no question of "gender parity". This makes it all the more important field of action: young talent & careers.
... in relation to teaching
Inequality effects, disadvantages and marginalisation are the consequences of unprovable prejudices, stereotypes and role clichés, which themselves remain mostly unconscious and are reflected in invisible structures. This institutionalisation gives them a certain stability and makes them difficult to break down, whereas the teaching field of action would like to work.
... in relation to further education and training
In this section you will find an overview of the field of action: further education and training for employees in technology and administration. It presents offers, outlines funding opportunities, links information on the legal framework and offers the opportunity to leave comments, requests and ideas.
... in terms of well-being
To support the needs of menstruating people, the Koblenz campus provides free period products such as sanitary towels and tampons. These are available in various toilets on campus, namely
in the ladies' toilets on the ground floor of buildings E, M, G and H,
in the "Toilet for All" in the F building and
in the ladies' toilet in the basement of the D building.
This offer is intended to contribute to equal opportunities and barrier-free access to necessary hygiene products.
Scholarships
Women are still underrepresented in the academic world. Financial aspects often represent significant barriers to pursuing scientific careers. Students or doctoral candidates with child(ren) or caring responsibilities are usually only able to pursue gainful employment to a very limited extent, if at all. Scholarships offer a welcome opportunity to reconcile family, studies and professorship appointments while being able to plan financially relatively independently. Numerous state institutions, research organisations and foundations across Germany and the federal states therefore offer support measures for young female academics with the aim of increasing the proportion of women in academia and research. In the following, we would like to give you an initial overview of internal and external funding opportunities in the form of scholarships and mentoring programmes for female students, graduates and postdocs.
Scholarships for students
Finding a suitable scholarship is not easy for students due to the abundance of possible scholarship providers. In addition to the organisations for the promotion of gifted students, there is a large number of scholarship-awarding foundations, about which we will be happy to provide you with further information on scholarships for students would like to offer.
Graduate, postdoctoral and habilitation scholarships
We would also like to draw your attention to the Interdisciplinary Centre for Research, Graduate Support and Human Resource Development (IFGPZ) which, as a central graduate academy, offers information on financial funding opportunities. The various grant programmes aim to improve the visibility of female academics and their professorship appointments and contribute to increasing the proportion of women in scientific careers.
